Martin Sixt founded the car rental company Sixt Autofahrten and Selbstfahrer in 1912.  He began the company with just three cars, two Mercedes and one Luxux Deutz Landaulet. Sixt was one of Germany’s first car rental company’s and specialized in day-trips and custom tours.  The company’s original customers were members of nobility and oil rich americans.

The company rebuilt itself after World War II and relaunched as “Auto Sixt” Rent A Car.  By 1966, Sixt was able to open its first airport offices in Frankfurt am Main and Munich.

The company continued to grow and expand for the next two decades.  By 1982 Sixt changed its name from Auto Sixt to Sixt Autovermietung GmbH and adopted the Sixt/Budget logo.  The 1990s saw Sixt offering licenses and franchises.

In 1995, Sixt became the first German Rent A Car website on the internet, offering a preferred partnership with Hilton.

By 2007, Sixt was offering car rental bookings via iPhone.

Sixt continues to expand throughout Europe.  Alongside licensees and partners, the company is able to offer services at 3500 service stations worldwide.
