Highlights of a Trip to Salzburg

Salzburg is a wonderful city to explore - with its numerous spires, domes and beautiful buildings lining the Salzach River, and the stunning mountains in the background. Once you've arrived on your transfers from Salzburg airport to the city, you'll be keen explore the city of Mozart. Festung Hohensalzburg

This fortress on top of a cliff is 900 years old and holds its place as the most iconic building in the city. It is visible from all over the city, but when you visit it up close you could easily spend the best part of half a day exploring the building. You can walk up or take the funicular for a tour of this 11th century building - it was enlarged centuries later. You will see the impressive Golden Hall, the Marionette Museum, the Fortress Museum and more, and also enjoy some fabulous views over the city.

Mozart's Birthplace

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg, and you may be inspired to find out more about his life once you've settled in from your transfers from Salzburg airport. You can visit the house where Mozart was born, in 1756, and lived until he was 17. It is now home to an interesting collection of documents, instruments and other artefacts, such as the violin he played when he was a child.

Salzburg Residenz

You may catch sight of this impressive building as you pass on your transfers from Salzburg airport to the city. Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau was prince-archbishop of the city in the 16th century and he built this stunning Baroque palace. You can follow an audio guide of the palace and view the staterooms, tapestries, frescoes and more. The art gallery contains works of art by Dutch and Flemish painters, including Rubens and Rembrandt.

Mirabell Palace

Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau also built this palace, this time for his mistress. It was remodelled in the 18th century into a Baroque style and the interior is very impressive. You'll see the frescoes and the rose gardens on a tour, and you may even be able to catch a concert. Try to get here early to avoid the crowds.

Salzburg Museum

This fascinating museum is housed in the Neue Residenz palace. Inside, you will be able to find out all about the history of the city and there are art exhibitions and medieval artefacts to explore. You can also take a look at the Panorama Museum next door.
