Nanda Devi National Park: An Enthralling Abode for Wildlife

Highly protected for preserving flora and fauna, this national park is trekked by a plethora of nature lovers. Himalayan Thar, Himalayan musk, serow, and Indian Leopard reside the wildlife sanctuary. Approximately 80 bird species have made Nanda Devi National Park their home. This national park has 312 species of plants. Out of these plants, around 17 plants are rare. Nearby the Nanda Devi glacier, the overall vegetation decreases.
 
In 1939, Nanda Devi Basin was given the status of Sanctuary and it was then called as Nanda Devi Sanctuary. The sanctuary witnessed approximately 4000 visitors during 1960s and 70s. In 1982, there was a declaration that National Park will get 630.33 square kilometres area. During this period, it was named Nanda Devi National Park and was barred for the tourists because of various ecological threats.

Presently, Nanda Devi National Park falls in the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve which is having a sheltered area of 2,236.74 square kilometres and is bordered by a buffer zone of 5,148.57 square kilometres. Nanda Devi National Park is now open for visitors across different parts of India but has a set of rules that everyone should follow. Daily only two groups each comprising of 5 people and weekly 4 groups are allowed to enter the premises of this National Park accompanied by a registered guide. According to the rule of this park, the visitor must be above 14 years and provisions of wildlife protection act must be followed by each visitor.

By Air: Dehradun is the nearest airport from Joshimath. It is situated at an approximate distance of 295Km from Nanda Devi National Park. Jolly Grand airport is properly connected with Delhi. One can easily find a bus or cab from Dehradun to Joshimath.
 
By Rail: Rishikesh railway station is one of the nearest stations from Joshimath and approximately 276km distance from Nanda Devi national park. You can consider finding bus or taxi to Joshimath from Rishikesh railway station.

By Road: Joshimath is situated at a distance of 254Km from Rishikesh, 293km from Dehradun, and 274km from Haridwar. These four places are extremely well connected through road to various other parts of Uttarakhand state.
